Is shining on his back

Dugurengzhanag-a at his age of eighteen

Throwing down the opponents

As soon as he catches

 3. The Lovely Otter Horse

Ride on it by pulling the bridle

The strange country is an unexpected fierce

Get along with it by your love

Help for the young age of mine

Both of my father and mother

In the light blue space of the cosmic

Scattered with the sacred yellow camels

The golden Gobi of the Butargan-a shrubs

Ai-hu my Gobi

And the old camel herder

The precious and beautiful camels

When they born in the world luckily

The Gobi putting the flap of the tunic

And welcomed and received them

The grass of the other pastures

May not seem as their food

Grown such a plenty of Butargan-a shrubs

Only for the lovely camels here

10. The Ganggang Black Horse

                   (Mongolian folksong)

The beautiful Ganggang black horse

The Stamp of the Heaven (Tegri-yin Tamag-a)

Lyrics: Basanjab

Music: Jirgalsaihan Ingjid

In the fogy and blue mountains

There is Maral Deer bellowing

The baby crying in a cradle

Must be of our blood

Let me thinking of my mother

A life which embracing the Altai Mount

Ancestor of the Arluud Khereid Tribe

A life which embracing the Hanggai Mount

Ancestor of the Khalkh-a Borjigin Clan

The great and respected ancestors’

The Blue Stamp from the Mongkhe Tegri God

      It is not available elsewhere

      My blood is great Mongol

Guu-a Maral Alunguu-a Mother’s

Mongols from the three rivers

Burde Chinu-a as my first name

Born as her son

Let me thinking of my father

With the hooves of Mongol horses

Shaken the breast of Asia

With the honors of the Mongol ancestors

Splashed the far sea

Let me thinking of my ancestors

Ideographic Pictures from Inner Mongolia

By Holger Grimme
Delger’s calligraphy of traditional Mongol animals could easily be confused with the Bronze Age Prtroglyphs found in Eastern Mongolia. Even though thousands of years separate the dates of origin of these two different groups of pictures, they have feature in common: the feeling of the artists that there is a need to express the importance of certain domesticated animals within their culture.
Delger is working as a teacher/researcher at Inner Mongolia University. His main field is Mongolian History and Language. He is also an artist. Delger produces very meaningful Mongolian calligraphy. With the traditional Chinese brush (mao bi) he draws animals like horses, cattle, and sheep. These animals always resemble their written Uighur Mongolian form. In other words, a person familiar with the classical Mongolian script sees not only the shape of the animal, he can also read it with just a little bit of phantasy.
As the Mongols are a traditionally nomadic people, the meaning of livestock is the key for the understanding of their lifestyle.
Most important to the Mongols is the horse (Mong.”mori”), representing strength and independent freedom to roam around on the sheer endless ocean of the Inner Asian steppes and grasslands. The milk of the mare is used for the production of the legendary Mongol kumis, a fermented alcoholic beverage. Furthermore, it was on horseback that the largest empire the world has yet seen was conquered in the 13th century. Mongols doubt that a man who can’t ride a horse is really a man.
The camel (“temege”) serves as the ship of the Gobi desert and is a reliable means of transport. The common Bactrian camel has two humps. In these humps it can store amounts of liquid sufficient for longer journeys through areas where there is no water. As it has bigger hoofs than a horse, it doesn’t sink too deeply into fine sand or into the deep snow during the winter. The hair of the camel protects the rider in the icy winter when temperatures down to 50℃ minus are possible.
A very good example for the relationship between the Mongolian people and their animals is the way they encourage the mother camel to accept its newborn young. It happens frequently that the mother doesn’t care for the young one. In this case Mongol women sing special Humi songs to encourage the animal to feed the young. It can take hours of singing and many soft touches of the camel’s belly until the young is finally accepted by its mother.
Cattle (“Uker”) are the main source for the many delicious Mongolian dairy products, besides beef. These animals determine the everyday routine, especially of the Mongol women. The cows are milked twice a day, at daybreak in the early morning and before the sunsets in the evening. In between these fixed times the male herdsmen tend the cattle together with other animals within a radius of ten to fifteen miles from the yurt in the grassland. Lush grass is a reason for moving there with the whole family, yurt and all belongings, if it is too far to be within daily reach. During these years, more and more families are being settled down by programs sponsored by the government. In this way the children can receive a better education, and the herds are more protected during the cold winter. The herdsmen, however, often have to spend more time away from their families as the ways to the herds become longer. In some areas professional herdsmen tend the cattle of many families and only bring them back from the pastures by the end of the autumn.
The goats (“imaga”), and the sheep (“khoni”) are the smaller livestock, the latter on being the most numerous and producer of wool for clothing and for the felt of the yurt. A sheep is usually killed when a special guest arrives: A knife with an edge as sharp as a razor blade is the only tool a skilled herdsman needs for the killing of the sheep. At first, the sheep is laid with its back on the grass and then and exact slit is made surgically into the skin over its stomach. The herdsman then pushes his bare hand into the belly of the sheep and carefully moves it towards the sheep’s heart, where he breaks the aorta, the major blood vessel of the animal, so that it bleeds to death internally. The sheep remains silent all the time, only shivering now and then. On the question as to why the Mongols do not kill a sheep by cutting the throat of the animal, a herdsman said that is was too brutal.
Hundreds of songs have been devoted to the Mongolian horse, several to the other animals, expressing the unique relationship between herdsman and the tended flock, grown up over centuries and passed on from generation to generation. Delger’s skillful innovative ability to combine symbols of traditional Mongolian lifestyle with the classical Mongol script by means of a few strokes of the brush on the paper is unique.

This article is based on interviews with herdsmen, students, teachers and other people in Inner Mongolia during the years 1984-1987, as well as an extensive travel there.
